BIM/VDC Specialist

Technology & Design

Builds the 3D digital model of a project before it's built, so conflicts between trades get caught on a screen instead of on the jobsite.

BIM/VDC Specialist

What is a BIM/VDC Specialist?

A BIM (Building Information Modeling) or VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) Specialist builds and manages the 3D digital model that represents a project, with structure, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems all modeled together. Their core value is clash detection: finding the spot where a duct and a structural beam are modeled to occupy the same space, for example, before it becomes an expensive problem in the field where cutting into installed work is far costlier than fixing a model.

Reviewed October 2026. BIM/VDC Specialist is typically reached through promotion or years of experience in a related role, not a day-one starting point, so this chart shows the pay range for people already working as a BIM/VDC Specialist rather than entry-level pay. "Lower range" is the lower part of the national wage distribution for this occupation, "typical" sits around the national median, and "top of scale" is the upper part, since pay isn't actually tracked by years on the job. Real pay varies a lot by state, metro area, union status, and employer, so scale these up or down for your market.
